This painting is part of a group show opening Saturday Nov. 14, in LA at the Merry Karnowski Gallery. The group show is curated by Travis Louie and opens simultaneously with a solo show of his work. If you're in LA please come by - it'll definitely be a fun night. The theme of the group show is work that in some way relates/celebrates/honors the work of Ray Harryhausen. I have to admit, I worked on sketches for an unusually long period of time, striving to incorporate something from the movies that would honor this great man and his contribution. I had several ideas, one which even included an elaborately sculpted frame with a good number of his mythological creatures. Frustratingly, everything I did ended up looking like an Illustration for the work of RH and I didn't want to do that. Finally, it occurred to me that what really inspired me most about Harryhausen's work was the model making. The idea of building models to creatively visualize and actualize concepts; mythological or otherwise, is what made a big impression on me. This painting (somewhat Medusa like in nature) is loosely inspired by the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. In the story, Theseus is given a thread in order to find his way out of the labyrinth after descending its depths, to face the Minotaur. The painting continues along the theme of my previous maze paintings and drawings, engaging and exploring the idea that the labyrinthian recesses of our depths, might be of our own making. Likewise, the thread, fragile and seemingly insignificant, is our guide in and out of the passageways. In this sense, like Ray Harryhausen, I also engage the stories of mythology (which are really metaphorical stories about life) altering them slightly to offer my perspective… I also built a model but that's another post…
